Exploring internal mobility opportunities
Internal mobility opportunities arise from the Organization’s new resources requirements resulting, for instance, from new projects, restructuring or the need to replace departing staff. There may be a considerable time-lag between identification of requirements and publication of vacancies. Therefore opportunities may have been identified well before publication. This is why it is important that you explore all the channels described in question 1.3 if you are interested in internal mobility.
A document summarising your experience at CERN and any previous experience (ideally an updated CV) is very useful for a first meeting. Your HR Adviser will give you guidance on the appropriate approach in the light of this first meeting.
No. Only staff members with a limited-duration contract can apply for IC positions (see dedicated page in the CERN Admin e-guide).
You can, provided that you meet the requirements of the published post. Please note that if you are selected, any change in your career path will be subject to the annual advancement and promotion review exercise (MARS). In particular you must have performed your duties for at least a year for a possible change of career path to be considered (see Administrative Circular N°26 (Rev. 9)).
Although not obligatory, you are strongly recommended to inform your supervisor of your application as soon as possible, especially if you have been shortlisted. The HR Department will not inform your supervisor either of your application or its status without having obtained your consent.
Your supervisor is a key person in your mobility: to discuss your motivation for a change, to help you identify possible moves presenting the best compromise between the Organization’s needs and your aspirations, or recommend you to potential future supervisors. The annual interview is an ideal opportunity to approach the matter – but not the only one.
