Safety
For reasons of hygiene, it is forbidden to cook or store food in offices. Some buildings may provide a dedicated shared facility with a microwave and/or a fridge. These facilities will never be in a private office or lab area, where they could constitute a serious hazard. Any area that is provided must be kept clean and tidy. If you have any questions, contact your Territorial Safety Officer (TSO).
No. Offices are not equipped with suitable ventilation or fire detection and must never be used for this type of work. Furthermore, the storage of chemical and other hazardous substances is forbidden in offices. Should you need workshop or laboratory facilities, please speak to your supervisor or Territorial Safety Officer (TSO).
Small quantities in storage provided or a suitcase neatly placed in an office is acceptable. However the storage of large quantities of personal effects in an office is not authorized. Offices should be kept clean and tidy for safety reasons.
No. Your CERN office is not designed as accommodation and must never be used for sleeping purposes. If you need assistance with accommodation, please contact the CERN Housing Service.
Respecting safety rules is a fundamental part of our work. Compliance must be an integral part of our working procedures and methods.
If you know the operation that you are asked to perform is contrary to safety rules, you should discuss the matter with your supervisor or his/her supervisor. If your supervisor asks you to disregard the safety rules, you are entitled to refuse to perform the requested operation. In this case, you should report the matter to your Departmental Safety Officer.
The personal dosimeter records radiation doses received by the person to whom it belongs and must be use only by that person. The doses are recorded following procedures and modalities agreed between CERN and the Host States. If you borrow and use the dosimeter of your colleague, that will prevent CERN from correctly measuring the received doses, and from complying with its obligations with the Host States. It is important to remember the consequences that our actions can have on our security, the security of our colleagues and of the public, the environment, and CERN.
