Children's day-care centre at Champs-Fréchets (Commune of Meyrin crèche)

CERN has signed in 2007 an agreement with the commune of Meyrin under which, in exchange for a contribution to the funding of the "Espace de Vie Enfantine" (EVE) at Champs-Fréchets, 20 places are reserved for members of the CERN personnel.

The commune of Meyrin has chosen a multi-age teaching system for the centre, which means that groups comprise children of different ages varying between 4 months and 4 years. The building, located just a couple of kilometers from the CERN sites (Meyrin and Prévessin), has been designed with this multi-age approach in mind, allowing easy movement between "open" spaces for physical activities, artistic expression and common meals and more intimate spaces suitable for games in small groups, verbal communication and rest periods. The children are supervised by a trained team of educational staff from the commune of Meyrin's Service de la petite enfance (infant education service), who is also responsible for managing the centre.

Allocation of places

Places are allocated to children whose parents both work or study, irrespective of the category of members of the CERN personnel  (staff members, fellows, associates and users) and irrespective of their place of residence (France or Switzerland).

The commune of Meyrin is responsible for allocating the 20 places reserved for CERN, according to availability.
Places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Where possible, brothers and sisters will be kept together and preference will be given to single-parent families.

Enrolment

Applications are accepted at any time of the year. Parents must complete the enrolment formalities with the Meyrin infant education Service (see details below) themselves.

The application form (in PDF and in French only) can be downloaded from the website of the commune of Meyrin. This application form must be returned by post or e-mail, accompanied by a recto/verso copy of the valid "carte de légitimation" or "attestation de fonctions", and will not be registered until all the required documents have been produced.

The Meyrin infant education Service will confirm enrolment and send all the practical information.

Please note that in order to remain on the waiting list, one need to confirm every 3 months to the Meyrin infant education Service his/her interest. This can be done through a phone call or by e-mail.

Organisation of the EVE

The EVE is open all year except for four weeks in August, the week after Easter and also the working days between Christmas and the New Year. Its opening hours are 7.00 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. Mondays to Fridays.

An attendance of at minimum 3 full days is required.

Financial contribution payable by parents

Parents will be charged 23 056 CHF per year per child (charged in 10 monthly instalments) for the full-time day-care option (a pro rata reduction will be granted for the other options).

"Family reductions" will be granted to parents placing more than one child in the day-care centre (50% for the second child, free for the third child onwards).

Parents' financial contributions cover about 2/3 of the actual cost of each place, and the remaining costs are shared equally between CERN and the commune of Meyrin.
