As you may have read in the Bulletin, part 2 of the Work Well Feel Well series looks at why taking a break is so important.
Time to take a beneficial break - short, long, and micro breaks all contribute to our wellbeing
Taking regular breaks is good for our physical and mental wellbeing. As we approach the end of another busy year, we tend to focus on bigger breaks, the holidays, and forget how important and beneficial smaller breaks throughout the day can be. Whether you enjoy eating lunch with colleagues, having some alone time, or doing sports/other activities, the official one-hour lunch break is an important opportunity to disconnect from work. Let's reclaim it!
A good break allows us to regain our energy, change perspective, and increase efficiency. And so does a good night's sleep.
We warmly recommend you look at the following resources on self-reflection and quality sleep:
- Advice for a good night's sleep
- Recent talks by CERN Medical Service psychologists on the topics of “Flash disconnect” and “Cardiac coherence” provide practical advice and exercises to take a break during the working day.
- The recording of the 2019 CERN talk “Sleep: The Wake Up Call” by Vicki Culpin highlights the importance of resting and quality sleep.
- For those who prefer to use their break for sports, other activities, or perhaps finding a new hobby, the Staff Association provides a list of wide-ranging clubs.
